Review of the Honda Rebel 1100 With DCT

honda rebel 1100

In May 2024, I had the opportunity to test the Honda Rebel 1100 equipped with DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission). This test was made possible thanks to Dallaire Équipement Saint-Bruno. I was able to ride this motorcycle for two weeks to conduct a thorough analysis and determine who this bike is for. First, I’ll discuss the engine, suspension, and DCT transmission. Then, I’ll cover the parking brake, riding position, and manoeuvrability. Finally, I’ll talk about its dimensions and some other features.

Engine

The Honda Rebel 1100 is powered by a 1,084 cc twin-cylinder Honda engine. This engine produces 87 HP. It runs smoothly with very little vibration at normal speeds. However, when you exceed 100 km/h on the highway, more pronounced vibrations can be felt in the handlebars. This is normal because the engine revs at almost 4,000 RPM in this speed range.

This engine is powerful and very surprising. You can feel all the torque it develops every time you twist the throttle. I liked the sound it makes when downshifting. The fuel consumption is about four to five litres per 100 km, providing a range of 250 km to 300 km.

Suspension

The suspension could be better, in my opinion. I found it too firm. Suspension is a very important aspect for me, and it’s always one of the first points I focus on when starting a test. Some suspensions are firmer than others depending on the manufacturer. With some, you can achieve a satisfactory setting through adjustments. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the comfort I wanted with this one.

Transmission

The Honda Rebel 1100 is equipped with a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). It’s not an automatic transmission but rather an automated manual transmission. Gear shifts are made automatically or semi-automatically, depending on the selected mode. There’s no clutch lever or foot shifter. You simply engage the bike by pressing the “D” button on the right handlebar and then twist the throttle to go.

My Experience with the BMW R12: A Journey of the Heart

I really liked how this transmission operates, especially in semi-automatic mode. Gear changes are smooth and seamless, without any jerking, and you don’t need to release the throttle. An additional $1,000 is required for this transmission, but it’s worth the cost.

Parking Brake

It’s important to note that when the engine is stopped, the Honda Rebel 1100 automatically shifts to neutral. Therefore, there is a parking brake located on the left handlebar. This brake ensures that the vehicle does not move when parked on an incline, for example. It is crucial to engage it.

Riding Position and Comfort

The bike is very low. For a tall person like me, the riding position is not ideal. My knees are higher than my hips, even though the footrests are more towards the front of the vehicle.

As for the seat, it is not very comfortable for long rides. It is hard, and your buttocks can get sore after riding more than 250 km.

Manoeuvrability and Ease of Riding

With its low centre of gravity and light weight, the Honda Rebel 1100 is a very maneuverable and easy-to-ride motorcycle. These two aspects are among the bike’s strong points. You quickly feel confident when sitting behind the handlebars. When you need to put your feet on the ground, they easily rest flat, even for shorter riders.

Dimensions

  • Seat height: 27.6 in
  • Wheelbase: 59.6 in
  • Curb weight (DCT): 514 lb
  • Fuel tank capacity: 13.6 litres
  • Front tire: 18 in
  • Rear tire: 16 in

Cruise Control

The Honda Rebel 1100 is equipped with cruise control. I always appreciate when the motorcycles I test have this feature. It allows you to rest the hand that holds the throttle. However, the cruise control controls are on the same handle as the throttle. This makes it difficult to set the cruise control while maintaining a constant throttle. In my opinion, it should be located on the left handlebar.

Riding Modes

The Rebel 1100 offers three preset riding modes (sport, standard, and rain) in the onboard computer. There is also an additional mode that can be programmed according to your preferences. This system controls the throttle and necessary safety systems based on road conditions or personal preferences.

Most of my test was done in sport mode. The bike delivers all its power in this mode, which is not necessarily suitable for riding in the rain. Rain mode, which I tried once or twice, is more appropriate for wet conditions. In this mode, the safety controls are enhanced, and the bike is less powerful.

Who Is the Honda Rebel 1100 For?

The Honda Rebel 1100 is a maneuverable, easy-to-ride, and powerful motorcycle. It is perfect for beginners or those who are not tall enough to reach the ground easily. Additionally, the DCT transmission does an excellent job with gear changes, making it ideal for staying relaxed without the added stress of manual shifting. This allows you to focus on enjoying the moment and the beautiful scenery passing by. However, it may not be the ideal bike for long trips of more than 250 km. By adding comfort elements like a more comfortable seat, long journeys could become feasible.
