The Ducati Desert X comes standard with a non-adjustable linear-type steering damper. This is suitable for most conditions, but what about in more challenging situations? Would it be better to have more control and adjustment? We have the answer! The solution is to replace the original equipment with the Vanasche handlebar mount and its adjustable rotary steering damper.

In this article, we will talk about the benefits of the handlebar mount itself. We will show the ease of installation and test the optional rotary steering damper. Finally, we will show you other unexpected advantages this kit will offer.

Vanasche Advantage

The original Ducati handlebar mount includes a unique bolt pattern that limits the choice of mountable accessories. The first advantage of the Vanasche handlebar mount is that it uses the pattern of the KTM Adventure 790–890 motorcycles and its Husqvarna cousins. It, therefore, offers an increased choice for mounting other elements on top of the handlebar.

Another interesting advantage is the quality of the mount’s materials. It is made of highly durable stainless steel, ceramic beads blasted, and anodized for a flawless and durable finish.

Finally, the complete kit has little effect on the overall positioning of the handlebars. In fact, the handlebar mount allowing the addition of the rotary steering damper only raises the handlebars by 10 mm (3/8 inch).

Easy to Install?

Let’s talk about installation. The operation is done with basic tools and is very easy. Allow about two hours to complete the modification. First, remove the stock steering damper and the original handlebar mount. Then, reinstall the new Vanasche mount and install the optional new adjustable rotary steering damper. Be careful when removing the retaining bolts from the mount from below. They tend to disappear into small hiding places inside the fairing.

Trail Behaviour

I was really satisfied with the combination of the Vanasche handlebar mount and the rotary damper. Why? Firstly, because of the level of adjustment of the damper. By adjusting it to the softest setting, it is possible to remove all resistance and heaviness when turning the handlebar. I sometimes use this adjustment in ultra-slow, technical sections. At the other end of the adjustments, the handlebar becomes more difficult to turn, offering more resistance. As a result, the steering damper will absorb larger impacts. This firm adjustment will also prevent the handlebar from jerking in your arms and keep the bike stable.

Additional Bonus Advantages

Visually, compared to the original equipment, the new Vanasche handlebar mount is much less bulky.

Furthermore, from experience, using super-aggressive tires on the road can cause constant wobbling on the highway. This wobbling can even turn into head shakes in less favourable conditions. By installing the handlebar mount system with the adjustable rotary damper, the wobbling completely disappeared in my case. A simple “on-the-fly” adjustment on the road transformed the bike. My fear of using knobby off-road tires is now a thing of the past.

Conclusion

I recommend the Vanasche handlebar mount for the Ducati Desert X. Whether it’s for the build quality, the friendliness of the people on site, or the fact that the concept really works. With a listed price of $200, I find it very reasonable for the benefits this unit offers. Additionally, if you already own a Scott’s rotary steering damper, it’s a direct mount that requires no modification.
