My Return to Motocross With the Apollo MXR 125

A few months ago, I suddenly felt the urge to get back into motocross. Of course, I wasn’t about to immediately buy a big two-stroke bike. I needed to relearn the basics gradually—without injuring myself! My bike of choice ended up being a nearly new 2019 Apollo MXR 125. It had hardly been used, which is clear from the photos! This motocross bike, ideal for beginners, shines and shows no visual flaws.

You might say, “Yeah, but it’s just a little Chinese bike.” ABSOLUTELY! And I have no regrets about my purchase. This off-road bike has delivered more than expected. I’ve been able to relearn motocross riding at my own pace with this little machine. I’ll start by talking about the bike itself. Then you’ll read a brief technical description of the Apollo MXR. Finally, I’ll cover its maintenance and give you my general opinion of this bike. Enjoy the read!

The Look of the Apollo MXR 125

The 2019 Apollo MXR 125 is a machine that has captured the attention of motocross enthusiasts. It offers surprising performance and reliability for a “little Chinese bike.” This bike is equipped with a 125 cc engine, providing enough power for beginner motocross riders, while still being stimulating for more experienced riders. In all honesty, this is an off-road bike that deserves more recognition.

A Standout Design

The sturdy frame and responsive suspension of the MXR 125 allow for exceptional handling on the most demanding terrains. Having tested its limits, trust me on that! The MXR 125 is also appreciated for its aesthetics. Its aggressive design and modern graphics reflect the spirit of motocross. Its sharp black and orange colours stand out, competing with KTM, Honda, and Yamaha bikes!

Technical Specifications of the Apollo MXR 125

In terms of technical specs, the Apollo MXR 125 features a four-stroke, air-cooled, single-cylinder engine capable of delivering 87 hp. Don’t forget its four-speed manual transmission, which ensures precise control and quick response.

Customization Options to Suit Your Needs

If you opt for the large-wheel kit sold separately, the seat height will be 34 inches. Combine that with a ground clearance of over 13 inches, and you’ll get a comfortable riding position and the ability to easily overcome obstacles. I’m 6′ 3″ and can sit comfortably and ride the bike with ease. The Apollo MXR 125 weighs just 160 lb, making it easy to handle, yet sturdy enough to withstand the rigours of off-road riding. Its small size makes it easy to attach behind my SUV, another great advantage.

Critics and users often highlight the good durability of the MXR 125, thanks to its double-cradle steel frame and quality construction. The front and rear disc brakes perform reliably and consistently, which is essential for safety in extreme sports like motocross, especially for beginners.

Necessary Improvements to Ride in Quebec

This off-road bike doesn’t come ready to ride on Quebec’s federated trails. You’ll need to add a few things, like a white front headlight and a red rear brake/position light. Lastly, you’ll also need to install a speedometer and, of course, pay for the FQMHR trail pass. These additions cost about $150 total if you shop wisely online. Expect to spend a few hours installing them, as the MXR 125 doesn’t have a built-in battery. I had to get creative with the installation, but I managed to do it myself. It’s doable, accessible, and not too complicated.

That said, this bike truly shines on private terrain or official tracks. The annual pass for FQMHR-affiliated tracks is free, although there might be fees at the gate.

Maintenance of the Apollo MXR 125

The maintenance of the Apollo MXR 125 is relatively simple, making it an ideal choice for beginners entering the motocross world. Replacement parts are readily available, and there is an active online community for support and advice. The parts are more than affordable and easy to find.

Can-Am Pulse and Origin Electric Motorcycles: An Exciting Discovery

Oil changes and lubrication are intuitive and easy to perform. The air filter is easily accessible, and the carburetor can be removed for cleaning as needed. I recommend replacing the stock carburetor with a better-quality one right from the start, as it simplifies future maintenance. I noticed the stock carburetor tends to require a bit more care.

The MXR 125’s price-to-quality ratio is often cited as a major advantage of this model. It offers a quality riding experience without the high price often associated with performance bikes. At $2,250 for a new bike delivered directly to your door, it’s not a huge financial risk.

Investing in Quality Gear for Your Safety

Before heading out on your motocross adventure, always keep safety and mandatory equipment in mind. These are purchases I don’t factor into the cost of acquiring the bike. If you haven’t already, make sure to get a helmet, boots, and gloves, among other things. As with ATVs, safety requirements are essential. Your life is worth more than saving $100 on lower-quality gear. Always prioritize your safety—it’s crucial!

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

The 2019 Apollo MXR 125 is an off-road bike that offers an attractive combination of performance and style. Whether you’re a novice or a motocross veteran, this bike is a solid and affordable option that promises excitement and satisfaction on the track or trails. For those seeking a reliable, affordable, and fun bike, the Apollo MXR 125 is definitely worth serious consideration. In my case, to relearn how to ride and properly use a clutch on a motocross bike, it was the perfect choice.

Moving on to a More Powerful Bike

It’s clear that once I finished relearning, I rushed to Yamaha to buy a slightly bigger model. My next article will be about the 2024 Yamaha TTR-230, which I bought afterward. The only real problem with motocross is that the desire for a bigger bike comes quickly.
